It was first released in 2017. In 2019, it was released in China by Tencent.
The main and OLED models are hybrid home and handheld consoles, as the system can dock for television output and the JoyCons are removable.
The lite model is a handheld console without the ability to dock for television output. In addition, the controllers on the lite model are built into the console.
The Nintendo Switch line succeeds both the Wii U and the New Nintendo 3DS.
Models
Nintendo Switch
The original Nintendo Switch was released in most of the world on March 3, 2017.
It was published in mainland China on December 10, 2019, by Tencent.
It is a touchscreen tablet computer that can be set in the dock to become a home console.
It also has controllers that can be placed on the sides of the tablet computer to make it a portable console.
Nintendo Switch Lite
The Nintendo Switch Lite was released on September 20, 2019. Unlike the original Switch model, it is purely a handheld gaming machine. It lacks the ability to become a home console. The controllers can not be removed from the system, making games that require the controllers to be separated, such as the Nintendo Labo kits, are not compatible with this model.
Nintendo Switch OLED model
The Nintendo Switch OLED model was released in most of the world in October 8, 2021 and was published in mainland China in January 11, 2022 by Tencent. This model has all of the features of the original Nintendo Switch model. It has a 7 inch 720p resolution OLED display. When docked, video will be output to 1080p resolution. It also features 64 GB of internal storage and enhanced audio functions. The adjustable stand for use in tabletop mode is also wider than that of the original model.
Development
While under development, the Nintendo Switch was known under the codename "Nintendo NX".
