Sonic & Knuckles is the fourth 16-bit game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, and the sixth overall.

It has a pass-through slot on the top of the cartridge, dubbed "Lock-on technology", that can add Knuckles as a playable character in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and when it is combined with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 it will become Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The latter allows the play of Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and as Tails in Sonic & Knuckles. If it is combined with Sonic the Hedgehog, it will simply play the Blue Sphere bonus game.

Versions

Sonic & Knuckles was originally released for the Sega Genesis in 1994. It was released in the Sonic Jam compilation for Saturn in 1997, in Sonic Mega Collection for GameCube in 2002, in Sonic Mega Collection Plus for PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2004 and for Windows in 2006. It was then released for Wii Virtual Console and Xbox 360 in 2007, in Sonic Classic Collection for Nintendo DS in 2010, for PlayStation 3 in 2011, and for Nintendo 3DS in 2015.
