The Nintendo DS, the fifth handheld video game console released by Nintendo, was first released in 2004.

The Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite are backward compatible with most games from its predecessor, the Game Boy Advance. The systems in the Nintendo DSi line do not have backward compatibility.

It was succeeded by the Nintendo 3DS, which was released in 2011.



Nintendo DS

The original Nintendo DS had backward compatibility with the Game Boy Advance. It was released in North America on November 21, 2004, in Japan on December 2, 2004, in Oceania on February 24, 2005, in Europe on March 11, 2005, and in China, through iQue, on July 25, 2005.

Nintendo DS Lite

The Nintendo DS Lite had a smaller form factor and retained backward compatibility with the Game Boy Advance. It was released in Japan on March 2, 2006, in Oceania on June 1, 2006, in North America on June 11, 2006, in Europe on June 23, 2006, in China through iQue, in June 2006, and in South Korea on January 18, 2007.
