Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the combined version of the 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog video games, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles.
When placing the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 cartridge in the pass-through slot on the top of the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge, dubbed "Lock-on technology", Knuckles is added as a playable character. The game becomes Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and upon completion of the levels and their respective stories in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the game continues directly into the story of Sonic & Knuckles and the respective levels.
