Puyo Puyo, known outside Japan as Puyo Pop until 2017, is a Japanese puzzle video game series.
It was created on October 25, 1991 by Compile.
The first game was the original Puyo Puyo, which was initially released on Family Computer Disk System and MSX2 in Japan.
The video games were developed by Compile as a spin-off of its Sorcery Saga games.
Sonic Team took on development duties in 2001 after Sega acquired full rights to the series.
