An integrated circuit, monolithic integrated circuit, IC, or chip, or microchip, is a set of electronic circuits in a chip made of semiconductor material such as silicon.

History

The first integrated circuit was patented by the German engineer Werner Jacobi in 1949. However, the first working integrated circuit was not completed until much later.

Jack Kilby demonstrated the first working integrated circuit while employed at Texas Instruments on September 12, 1958. He patented his integrated circuit on February 6, 1959.

The first customer of the integrated circuit was the United States Air Force.
