Nintendo Research & Engineering Development (開発技術部, RED) was formed in 1996.
History
In 1996 when Gunpei Yokoi, manager of Nintendo Research & Development 1 resigned from Nintendo, then-president of Nintendo, Hiroshi Yamauchi, created Nintendo Research & Engineering Development and appointed Satoru Okada its general manager.
The hardware development team of Nintendo Research & Development 1 was reassigned to Nintendo Integrated Research & Development, while the software development team remained at Nintendo Research & Development 1.
Throughout the lifespan of the development, Nintendo Research & Engineering Development designed Nintendo's portable video game consoles.
In January 2012, Satoru Okada retired from Nintendo. On February 16, 2012, Nintendo RED was merged into Nintendo Integrated Research & Development, which effectively combined the portable and home console development teams into one division.
