The Game Boy was a line of handheld video game consoles that constituted the second handheld video game platform released by Nintendo. It was preceded by the Game & Watch series of handheld consoles.

It was succeeded by the Game Boy Color, which was released in 1998.

Models

Game Boy

The original Game Boy had a monochrome, green-tinted screen. It was released in Japan on April 21, 1989, in North America on July 31, 1989, and in Europe on September 28, 1990.

Play It Loud!

Nintendo's Play It Loud! line of Game Boy consoles contained the same hardware specifications but was sold in different color cases, including transparent. This line of Game Boy consoles was known as Game Boy Bros. in Japan. They were released on March 20, 1995.

Game Boy Pocket

The Game Boy Pocket was a smaller Game Boy unit that required fewer batteries. It was released on July 21, 1996.
