The Nintendo DSi is a variant of the Nintendo DS that lacks the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot but has a front-facing and rear-facing camera, and has internal and external storage (the latter of which uses SD cards). It was released in Japan on November 1, 2008, in Australia on April 2, 2009, in Europe on April 3, 2009, and in North America on April 5, 2009. It was released in China by iQue as iQue DSi in December 2009.
The Nintendo DSi XL is an updated version of the Nintendo DSi that is slightly larger with larger screens. It was released in Japan on November 21, 2009, in Europe on March 5, 2010, in North America on March 28, 2010, and in Australia on April 15, 2010.
Games for the Nintendo DSi
The Nintendo DSi supported all Nintendo DS games. However, due to a lack of the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot, it did not support Game Boy Advance games or Nintendo DS games that required the Game Boy Advance slot.
As the Nintendo DSi had upgrades such as a more powerful ARM7 CPU, both a front-facing and rear-facing camera, and internal and external flash memory support, games made exclusively for the Nintendo DSi would not run on the Nintendo DS. These came on white cartridges and were labeled as "Nintendo DSi Exclusive" games.
In addition, there were games that would run on Nintendo DS systems but were optimized for better performance on the more powerful hardware of the Nintendo DSi. These came on black cartridges and were labeled as "Nintendo DSi Enhanced" games.
Due to internal and external flash memory support, the Nintendo DSi, like the Wii, could connect to an online shop called the DSi Shop. The games and applications sold on the DSi Shop were called DSiWare and could be purchased with Nintendo Points (previously known as Wii Points). The DSiWare games and applications were also sold on the Nintendo eShop (the successor to the Wii Shop and DSi Shop) for the Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS.
After September 30, 2016, Nintendo Points Prepaid Cards could no longer be redeemed, and the DSi Shop closed on March 31, 2017.
Retail Nintendo DSi exclusive games
These titles can not be played on a Nintendo DS. They can be played on Nintendo DSi, Nintendo 3DS, and New Nintendo 3DS systems (as well as Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS systems).
