Street Fighter II was series of a fighting video games by Capcom, originally released for the arcade market in 1991. The games comprised the second entry in the Street Fighter series.

History

The 1991 arcade release was titled Street Fighter II: The World Warrior and was also known simply as Street Fighter II.

The game was a smash hit, leading Capcom to release an updated version with additional playable characters titled Street Fighter II: Champion Edition in 1992.

Also in 1992, the Taiwanese hacking group, Hung Hsi Enterprise Taiwan, released a bootleg version of Street Fighter II: Champion Edition. The title screen of this version only displayed Street Fighter II. However, it is colloquially known as the Rainbow Edition because of the color of the text on the title screen. This version made tweaks to the special moves of the various characters and increased the speed of the game.

In December 1992, Capcom released Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting. While it is uncertain whether this game was released as a response to the Taiwanese bootleg, the former increased the speed of the game in a matter similar to the latter. This version also added new special moves for each character.

In 1993, Capcom released Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers. This version balanced the abilities of the characters and added four new characters to the playable character roster.

The Sega Genesis release titled Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition was a compilation containing both Street Fighter II: Champion Edition and Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting.

In Brazil, Tec Toy released Street Fighter II' for the Sega Master System. This version combined elements of Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition and Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers.

Super Street Fighter II: Tournament Battle, released in 1993, was a special edition of Super Street Fighter II that allowed up to eight players to battle in an elimination tournament.

In 1994, Capcom released Super Street Fighter II Turbo. This version added new combination moves known as super combos and air combos. It also added the new secret character, Akuma.

Hyper Street Fighter II: Anniversary Edition was released in 2003. All of the main characters from the previous Street Fighter II games were playable in this version.

In 2008, Capcom released Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. This version included the original assets from Super Street Fighter II Turbo as well as a remake of the game using high definition art created by Udon Entertainment. The high definition version also included remixed versions of the music from previous versions created by OverClocked ReMix members.

The series culminated in Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, which was released in 2017. Like Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, it was a remake of Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Also like its predecessor, it included a version with high definition resources as well as a version with the original resources. It also balanced the moves of some of the characters, added grapple breaks, added a cooperative gameplay mode where two players can team up against one character controlled by artificial intelligence, and added a first-person-battle mode known as Way Of the Hado.
