Shareware is a video game and application software business model. The name is a portmanteau of the words share and software.
These products, or part of them, are available for free to play but real-world money can be paid optionally to support the author or to purchase additional content.
History
The shareware business model began with the release of PC Talk by Andrew Fluegelman in 1982.
PC Talk encouraged users to send money to Fluegelman for the software, although doing so was optional.
