Nintendo Software Planning & Development (SPD) was formed in 2003 as a result of the merger of Nintendo Research & Development 1 and Nintendo Research & Development 2. After a corporate restructuring by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, it was merged with Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development to become Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development in 2015.
