Herman Hollerith (February 29, 1860 – November 17, 1929) was a German-American inventor and businessman.
Electromechanical punched card tabulating machine
Hollerith received a patent for an electromechanical punched card tabulating Machine, which improved upon the early devices that read punched cards mechanically, on January 8, 1889. It recorded information through a mechanized binary code in that it sent an electromechanical pulse that incremented a counter. A specified part of a card would be punched if one set of requirements was met or not punched if they were not.
He founded Tabulating Machine Company company in 1896 to lease his invention throughout the world to census bureaus and insurance companies. The company was renamed to The Tabulating Machine Company in 1905.
International Business Machines
International Time Recording Company, Computing Scale Company, and the Tabulating Machine Company were arranged to merge by Charles R. Flint as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company in 1911.
The merged company was renamed International Business Machines in 1924.
