It was released on July 8, 2009, for Windows and on July 11, 2016 for Linux and macOS, using ScummVM.
Plot
Astronauts travel to detonate a meteor before it can crash into the Earth. However, the asteroid is a spaceship that transports them light years away to a desolate alien planet.
Development
The Dig uses the SCUMM scripting language, which was also used in the previous LucasArts adventure games.
It had a turbulent development cycle, and was led by four project leaders throughout its development: Noah Falstein, Brian Moriarty, Dave Grossman, and Sean Clark. The latter was the project leader for the finished product.
Novelization
A novelization of The Dig was written by Alan Dean Foster. It expands on the game, describing scenes from the alien's point of view, showing Earth's reaction to the destruction of the asteroid, and offering an further fleshing out the game's ending.
