The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening was an action-adventure video game published by Nintendo in 1993. It was the fifth game in The Legend of Zelda series. As part of one of Nintendo's most popular series, it was brought to several of Nintendo's subsequent handheld systems, either as remakes or through emulation.

Story

Link, the hero of the Kingdom of Hyrule, is on a raft in the middle of a storm, and washes up on Koholint Island.

After being rescued by a girl named Marin, he discovers that in order to leave the island, he needs to collect the eight instruments of the Sirens to awaken the legendary Wind Fish.

Development

The Legend of Zelda was directed and designed by Takashi Tezuka, who wanted the game to feel like the American television series Twin Peaks. Shigeru Miyamoto produced the game while Yoshiaki Koizumi and Kensuke Tanabe wrote the story and script.

Versions of the game

As one of Nintendo's most popular titles, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening has been brought to many different systems, both through remakes and through emulation.

It was first released for the Game Boy in 1993. It then was remade in color for the Game Boy Color as The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX. This remake was released in Japan and North America in 1998 and in Europe in 1999.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX was released, via emulation, for the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in 2011.

It was remade once again, this time for the Nintendo Switch by Grezzo. This version was simply named The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and was released in 2019.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX was released, via emulation, for the Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda handheld video game console in 2021.
