Kojima Productions is a video game company that was founded on April 1, 2005 by Hideo Kojima.
As part of Konami
In 2005, Hideo Kojima was vice president of Konami Computer Entertainment Japan. At this point in his career, in addition to being vice president, Kojima had been a game designer with Konami for eighteen years. That year, the development teams, including his own, were merged back within Konami.
As a result of the merger, Hideo Kojima formed a new subsidiary within Konami on April 1, 2005, in order to relieve him of the administrative burdens of being vice president of Konami Computer Entertainment Japan.
Conflict within Konami and closure
Kojima Productions existed as a subsidiary of Konami until 2015 when conflicts with Kojima and the management of Konami came to a head.
This led to the removal of the Kojima Productions name and logo from the official Metal Gear website in March 2015, and, on April 26, 2015, the cancellation of Kojima Production's planned continuation of the Silent Hill series. The latter had previously been released as a playable teaser simply titled P.T.
This conflict ultimately culminated with the July 10, 2015 announcement that Kojima Productions had closed.
Reopening as an independent studio
On December 16, 2015, in a joint announcement with Sony Computer Entertainment, Hideo Kojima announced that Kojima Productions was reformed as an independent studio with staff members from the original Kojima Productions when it was a subsidiary of Konami.
