HD-DVD (High-definition Digital Versatile Disc) was a short-lived optical storage format.
It was launched on March 31, 2006, and was discontinued merely two years later on March 28, 2008.
Competition
It was designed to supersede DVD, but it never did so. It became obsolete due to the more successful competing high-definition optical storage format, Blu-ray.
