PlayStation 3 was the third home video game console by Sony. It was preceded by the PlayStation 2 and was succeeded by the PlayStation 4.

As part of the seventh generation of video game consoles, it competed primarily against the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.

Models

PlayStation 3

The original PlayStation 3 was released in Japan on November 11, 2006, in North America on November 12, 2006, and in Europe and Oceania on March 23, 2007.

All consoles in the PlayStation 3 line had backward compatibility with PlayStation video games.

The sixty gigabyte and twenty gigabyte launch consoles were backward compatible with the PlayStation 3 due to the inclusion of an Emotion Engine chip as part of the hardware.

Models made after launch did not include the Emotion Engine chip, so they lacked backward compatibility with the PlayStation 2]].

PlayStation 3 Slim

The PlayStation 3 Slim was released in Europe, North America, and Europe on September 1, 2009 and inan Japan and Oceania on September 3, 2009. As the name suggests, this model had a slimmer design than the original model.

The PlayStation 3 Slim retained the backward compatibility with PlayStation games but lacked PlayStation 2 support.

PlayStation 3 Super Slim

The last model, the PlayStation 3 Super Slim, had an even slimmer design. It was released in North America on September 25, 2012, in Europe and Oceania on September 28, 2012, and in Japan on October 4, 2012.

Like the previous model, the PlayStation 3 Super Slim retained the backward compatibility with PlayStation games but lacked PlayStation 2 support.
