Double Fine Productions is a video game company that was founded in July 2000 by Tim Schafer.
Foundation
Tim Schafer left LucasArts in 2000 to form a new video game studio called Double Fine Productions, along with much of the Grim Fandango staff.
First games and publisher issues
Their first two retail games, Psychonauts and Brütal Legend, both lost their publisher and funding halfway through development.
Smaller products
After having problems with publishers, they started to develop smaller downloadable only titles, starting with an RPG titled Costume Quest and a puzzle adventure game titled Stacking.
Crowdfunding
In 2012, they successfully crowdfunded an adventure game through Kickstarter titled Broken Age. In 2013, they successfully crowdfunded a turn-based strategy game through Kickstarter titled Massive Chalice. In 2015, they successfully crowdfunded a platforming game through Fig titled Psychonauts 2.
Acquisition by Microsoft
In 2019, they were acquired by Microsoft. All projects previously announced at that time were said to be unaffected, other than a change of publishers, however, Double Fine would be focusing on Microsoft platforms moving forward.
