The e-Reader, known as the Card e-Reader (カードeリーダー) in Japan, was a device by Nintendo utilizing dot code technology created by Olympus Optical.
It was a peripheral for the Game Boy Advance that would read a barcode on cards, which would allow the device to play games, unlock features in games, or play Nintendo Entertainment System games through an emulator contained in the read only memory of the device.
Versions
The original Card e-Reader lacked link-cable support. It was released in Japan in December 2001.
The Card e-Reader+ added link-cable support, allowing it to link up with a GameCube or another Game Boy Advance system. It was released in Japan in 2002.
The e-Reader was the international release and it was based on the Card e-Reader+. It was released in North America in September 2002 and in Australia in October 2003.
