[[Bowser]] has stolen the Power Stars that power the Comet Observatory that Princess Rosalina, the watcher of the stars, uses to travel to other galaxies.  
An Italian plumber named [[Mario]] travels to Delfino Island with Princess [[Peach]].


After [[Mario]] collects Power Stars and defeats Bowser and Bowser Jr., Bowser kidnaps [[Peach]] and tries to use the observatory to control the universe. Mario defeats him, rescues Peach, and saves the universe.
However, upon arriving, they discover that a doppelganger of Mario covered the island in paint.
 
Mario is punished by the islanders to act as a janitor, cleaning up the paint with water using a device called FLUDD.
