Disney Experiences is a division of The Walt Disney Company, the latter of which is commonly known simply as Disney.
Theme parks
The Walt Disney Outdoor Recreation Division was formed on June 3, 1980, to handle the theme park business of Disney. The theme park division was renamed Walt Disney Attractions in 1989. The theme park division was later renamed Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Worldwide in 2008.
Video games
Disney formed its video game division, Walt Disney Computer Software, in 1984, and began developing games internally in 1988. Walt Disney Computer Software was then reorganized into Disney Interactive on December 5, 1994.
Buena Vista Games was spun out of Disney Interactive in 2003, to act as a game publisher. Buena Vista Games was consolidated back within Disney Interactive and was renamed Disney Interactive Studios in 2007.
Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, and shut down internal game production at Lucasfilm's in-house game development studio, LucasArts, on April 3, 2013. Fewer than ten employees remained so LucasArts could continue to act as a licensor and publisher. Disney continued publishing and licensing video games under the LucasArts label until 2014, and continue to publish and license games under the Lucasfilm Games label.
Meanwhile, Disney renamed their game division Disney Games and Interactive Experiences in 2014. Disney shut down its internal game development studios in May 2016.
Merger of the Disney video game and theme park divisions
Disney has had an integration of their theme parks with video games since June 19, 1998, when they opened an interactive theme park and arcade named DisneyQuest. DisneyQuest closed on July 2, 2017, however, Disney continued its interest in interactive experiences in its theme parks. In 2018 Disney merged their video game and theme park divisions.
Post-merger the division was titled Walt Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products, however, it was shortened to Disney Parks, Experiences and Products in 2019.
Disney Experiences
The division was shortened to Disney Experiences in 2023.
