Sega Master System was originally known as the Sega Mark III in Japan, due to the release of the Sega SG-1000 and Sega SC-3000 in that region.

It was the second home video game console by Sega.

Included games

Early versions of the Sega Master System included a simple maze game, Snail Maze, embedded in the system's BIOS.

To play Snail Maze, the user had to press the up, 1, and 2 buttons simultaneously on the controller.

Later models did not include Snail Maze in the BIOS, and included Alex Kidd in Miracle World or Sonic the Hedgehog instead.

Legacy

The Game Gear portable video game console used similar hardware to the Sega Master System. Games from the latter could be played on the former with a simple cartridge converter.

The PlayPal, also known as the Coleco Sonic and the Pocket Gear, was released by Coleco in 2006. It was a portable video game console that included 20 built-in Sega Master System and Game Gear games.
