Headlander is an action-adventure Metroidvania-style video game developed by Double Fine Productions.

Plot

All of humanity has uploaded their consciousness into cloud storage and use robotic bodies if they wish to become corporeal. However, when artificial intelligence named Methuselah takes over the robots, trapping the consciousness of the humans inside, the head of the last remaining human is awoken. This human has to land on the heads of various robots in order to gain access to different rooms, ultimately facing down Methuselah in a bid to free humanity.

Development

Headlander was pitched during Amnesia Fortnight 2014, but the concept wasn't chosen to be expanded into a prototype.

However, the publishing rights to the game were picked up by Adult Swim Games and Double Fine expanded it into a full game which was released on July 26, 2016.
