Golden Axed is a video game for Windows. It is a prototype of a game in the Golden Axe series that was canceled after Sega closed the studio that was developing it, Sega Studios Australia, in 2013. The name Golden Axed is a play on Golden Axe as well as the slang term "axed", which means to cancel or get rid of something.

It only has one level, as it is merely a prototype. It was intended to be part of a series of games known as "Sega Reborn". These included 2.5D versions of this Golden Axe title, as well as games based on Altered Beast, Streets of Rage, and an endless runner version of Shinobi.

Sega published it for a limited time as part of their 60th anniversary celebration. It was released for free on October 18, 2020, for Windows on Steam and was only available for one day.

Controversy

After the game was released, developers who worked at Sega Australia Studios chastised Sega for the description of the game that called the prototype "buggy" and "janky". The game was made under crunch conditions, in which the developers were overworked, and they felt that Sega disrespected their efforts. Sega released a statement that clarified that it was not their intention to disrespect the people who had worked on the game, and rewrote the Steam description to be more positive.
