DOS stands for Disk Operating System.

History

Seattle Computer Products released 86-DOS in August 1980. It was licensed and then purchased by Microsoft.

Microsoft extended it into PC DOS for IBM, which was first released in August 1981, then further into MS-DOS, which was first released in March 1982.

After those releases, DOS became a common shorthand for those operating systems and those that are compatible with them.

Other notable DOS-compatible operating systems include Multiuser DOS, first released as Concurrent DOS (the third version of CP/M-86 with a PC-MODE module) in March 1984, and DR-DOS, first released in May 1988. These operating systems were Digital Research's successors to their popular CP/M operating system.

DOS continues to be developed as free and open-source software as FreeDOS, which was first released by Jim Hall and the FreeDOS team on January 12, 1998.
