Swordquest: Airworld was in development at Atari at the time the third game in the SwordQuest series was released in 1983. However, due to financial difficulties Atari accrued due to the video game crash that year, it was never released.

In 2022, for the fiftieth anniversary of Atari, Digital Eclipse created the game based on the original design documents.
