Dean Witter & Co.

In 1924, Dean Witter & Co. was founded by Dean Witter, his brother Guy Witter, and cousin Jean Witter in San Francisco, California, United States, as a retail brokerage firm.

Reynolds & Co.

In 1931, Reynolds Security was founded by Richard S. Reynolds Jr., Charles H. Babcock, and Thomas F. Staley in New York City, New York, United States, as a financial security business.

Morgan Stanley

Banking Act of 1933 separated commercial and investment banking. Because of this, J.P. Morgan & Co. had to split. J.P. Morgan & Co. retained its commercial banking business.

Some employees of J.P. Morgan & Co. left the company and formed Morgan Stanley, an investment banking company founded by Henry S. Morgan and Harold Stanley on September 16, 1935.

Reynolds Securities

Reynolds & Co. was incorporated as Reynolds Securities in 1971.

Dean Reynolds Organization

In 1978, Dean Witter & Co. merged with Reynolds Securities to become Dean Reynolds Organization Inc. At the time it was the largest securities merger in United States history.

Sears acquisition and Dean Witter, Discover & Co.

Sears acquired the Dean Reynolds Organization in 1981. It was spun-off from Sears as Dean Witter, Discover & Co. in 1993.

Morgan Stanley merged with Dean Witter & Discover Co. to form Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Discover Co. in 1997.
