The Sega Master System was the second home video game console by Sega.

It was preceded by the SG-1000 and succeeded by the Sega Genesis.

Console variations

Sega released the original console as the Sega Mark III in Japan in 1985 and as the Sega Base System in North America in 1986. Samsung released this version as the Gam*Boy in South Korea in 1989.

The first release of the console under the Sega Master System name was in Japan in 1987.

An updated version of the console had a form factor similar to the second version of the Sega Genesis console. Sega released this version as the Sega Master System II in North America and Samsung released it as the Aladdin Boy in South Korea.

After the release of the Sega Master System II, the original console variation was packaged as the Sega Master System in North America.
