Sharp Corporation (シャープ株式会社, Shāpu Kabushiki-gaisha) is a multinational electronics company based in Japan.
Hayakawa Metal Works
On September 15, 1912, Tokuji Hayakawa established a metal workshop in Tokyo, Japan. In 1915, he invented the Ever-Sharp mechanical pencil, which gave the company its future name.
In 1923, the Great Kantō earthquake destroyed the pencil business, so the company was moved to Osaka. The company was established as Hayakawa Metal Works in 1924 in Tanabe-cho, Osaka.
Hayakawa Electric Industry
In 1942, Hayakawa Metal Works was renamed Hayakawa Electric Industry.
Sharp Corporation
The company was renamed Sharp Corporation in 1970.
