Flash is a multimedia platform. Until 2020, it was developed by Adobe. From 2021 onward, it is developed by Harman for enterprise users and by Zhongcheng in China.

Adobe Animate was originally developed to create multimedia in the Flash format, however, Adobe discontinued Flash support on December 31, 2020 in favor of the HTML5 format for web content.

FutureSplash Animator

In 1993, FutureWave Software released a vector drawing application named SmartSketch. In 1995, FutureWave added frame-by-frame animation features to the product for use as a vector-based web animation tool and released it as FutureSplash Animator.

Macromedia Flash

In December 1996, Macromedia acquired FutureWave Software and rebranded FutureSplash Animator as Shockwave Flash 1.0.

Adobe Flash

On December 3, 2005, Adobe acquired Macromedia. Macromedia Flash was rebranded Adobe Flash.

Flash was discontinued by Adobe on December 31, 2020.
