APE, Inc. was a subsidiary of Nintendo that was established in March 1989 and was disbanded in 1995.

Formation

APE was founded after Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi decided to form a new company to support the work of a writer named Shigesato Itoi.

It was primarily founded to create Mother, although APE also provided development support for projects by other studios.

The sequel to Mother, Mother 2, was co-developed by HAL Laboratory, which was brought in after the game's development started to falter.

Closure

APE disbanded in 1995, and much of the former staff of APE joined a new company named Creatures, also a subsidiary of Nintendo, which was founded on November 8, 1995.
