Blu-ray is an optical storage format. It was launched on June 20, 2006, and was discontinued merely two years later on March 28, 2008.
Competition
It became the most popular format against the competing format, HD-DVD.
It was designed to supersede DVD, but it never overtook DVDs in popularity and was sold concurrently with them.
