Satoru Iwata (岩田 聡, Iwata Satoru, December 6, 1959 – July 11, 2015) was a businessman, programmer, and video game designer who was the third president of HAL Laboratory and the fourth president of Nintendo.

He was also the manager of Nintendo Software Planning & Development from 2003 until Shinya Takahashi took over in 2013.

Iwata was preceded by Tsuyoshi Ikeda and succeeded by Masayoshi Tanimura as president of HAL Laboratory. He was preceded by Hiroshi Yamauchi and succeeded by Tatsumi Kimishima as president of Nintendo.

Appearance in WarioWare games

Satoru Iwata appears in an anime-style form in the 2003 Game Boy Advance video game WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and in the 2006 Wii video game WarioWare: Smooth Moves.
