The Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU) is an American multimedia series by the Sony-owned studio Columbia Pictures that is spearheaded by films and television shows with characters related to the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. It also includes comics and music.
Purchase of Spider-Man film rights
In 1996, Marvel Enterprises went bankrupt. To save the company, the film rights to its most popular characters were sold to various film studios at relatively low prices. The rights to produce Spider-Man films, as well as films based on characters related to Spider-Man, were purchased by Sony.
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
From 2002 to 2007, Columbia Pictures produced three Spider-Man films. After the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which featured all three versions of Spider-Man produced by Sony Pictures, this version of Spider-Man was retroactively referred to by Sony as the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
