Nokia Bell Labs is an industrial research and scientific development company owned by Nokia.
Volta Laboratory
In 1880, Alexander Graham Bell, Chichester Bell, and Charles Sumner Tainter founded Volta Laboratory after Alexander was awarded the Volta Prize of 50,000 francs by the French Government.
Alternate names include Bell Laboratory, Alexander Graham Bell Laboratory, Bell Carriage House and the Bell Laboratory.
Initially, as had also been the case the previous year, project work and research were conducted in a rented house in the capitol of the United States, Washington, D.C.
Alexander Graham Bell formed the Volta Bureau to conduct research into the causes of deafness and how to improve the quality of life for the deaf.
Western Electric Engineering Department
The staff in research and development at Western Electric and its corporate parent American Telephone and Telegraph Company, or AT&T, merged in 1907. The resulting development division was named the Western Electric Engineering Department.
Bell Telephone Laboratories
In 1925, Bell Telephone Laboratories was founded. It was placed under the shared management of Western Electric and its parent company AT&T.
AT&T Bell Laboratories
Bell Telephone Laboratories was renamed AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1984.
Bell Labs Innovations
AT&T Bell Laboratories was renamed Bell Labs Innovations in 1996.
Nokia Bell Labs
Nokia acquired Bell Labs Innovations on April 15, 2015. The laboratory was renamed to Nokia Bell Labs.
