She was created by the English writer Lewis Carroll. Alice first appeared in the novel Alice in Wonderland in 1865.

Public domain status
Alice in Wonderland entered the public domain in the United Kingdom in 1907 when the copyright expired. This status is also held in the other one-hundred eighty countries that were signatories of the 1886 Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works.
