American James McGee (born on December 13, 1972) is an American video game developer.
Early life
American McGee was born on December 13, 1972, in Dallas, Texas, USA.
iD Software
Around 1994, at the age of 21, McGee joined iD Software in the technical support department. He became a level designer, working on Doom II, The Ultimate Doom, Quake, and Quake II.
American McGee's Alice
In 1998, American McGee was fired from iD Software and joined Electronic Arts shortly afterward. At EA, he directed a game with Rogue Entertainment, a studio based in the same building as iD Software.
In 2000, Electronic Arts published the game, titled American McGee's Alice. It followed Alice, a dark version of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.
Scrapland
Rogue Entertainment was closed in 2001, and McGee left Electronic Arts soon afterward. In 2002, he formed a company titled Carbon6, which was renamed The Mauretania Import Export Company in 2004.
McGee partnered with Enlight Software to produce Scrapland. The game was developed by MercurySteam and published by Enlight Software in 2004.
Bad Day L.A.
In 2005, Enlight Software announced Bad Day L.A., a satirical game set in the American city of Los Angeles, California.
The game, directed by American McGee, was published by Enlight Software in Europe and Aspyr Media in North America in 2006. It sold poorly and received low ratings from critics.
American McGee's Grimm
Spicy Horse, a development studio founded by American McGee in 2008, released an episodic video game titled American McGee's Grimm on the former digital distribution service GameTap from 2008 to 2009.
Alice: Madness Returns
In 2011, McGee developed an Alice sequel at Spicy Horse titled Alice: Madness Returns.
In 2015, Spicy Horse also released two short films set after the events of Madness Returns, titled Alice: Otherlands - Leviathan and Alice: Otherlands - A Night at the Opera.
