Pentium, also known as P5, was a microprocessor architecture by Intel. It was the fifth generation of x86 microprocessors.
It was expected to be named 586 or i586 due to the naming scheme of Intel's previous generations of x86 processors.
Intel did try to trademark 586 in the United States. They were denied due to the fact that the name, as a series of numbers, lacked trademark distinctiveness.
History
The first Pentium microprocessor was released by Intel on March 22, 1993.
It was succeeded by the Pentium Pro in 1995.
