Blu-ray, also known as BD (for Blu-ray Disc), is an optical storage format. It was launched on June 20, 2006.
Competition
It became the most popular format against the competing format, HD-DVD.
It was designed to supersede DVD, but it never overtook DVDs in popularity and was sold concurrently with them.
