RKO Pictures, LLC is a motion picture production company.
History
RKO Radio Pictures was founded on October 23, 1928 by David Sarnoff through a merger of Radio Corporation of America (RCA), Film Booking Offices of America (FBO), and the Keith-Albee-Orpheum theater chain. RKO stands for Radio-Keith-Orpheum.
Howard Hughes took control of the studio in May 1948. Under Hughes, the company went into turmoil, as Hughes was well known for meddling in the production of films distributed by RKO. The Walt Disney Company was one of the biggest studios that had their films distributed by RKO. However, after a disagreement with Hughes, Roy O. Disney created Buena Vista Film Distribution Company in 1953. This, along with the company being in disarray under Hughes, led to the company being bought out by the General Tire and Rubber Company in 1955.
General Tire and Rubber Company formed RKO General, Inc. in 1959. The company handled television, radio, and film distribution for its parent company.
In 1978, RKO General formed a subsidiary, RKO Pictures Inc., which handled the co-production of feature films and television series.
In 1989, RKO Pictures merged with Pavillion Communications to form RKO/Pavilion. In 1993, it was renamed RKO Pictures LLC.
