Yakuza 5, known in Japan as Ryū ga Gotoku 5: Yume, Kanaeshi Mono (龍が如く5 夢、叶えし者, "Like a Dragon 5: Fulfiller of Dreams"), is the fifth mainline game, and the tenth game overall, in the Like a Dragon series. It was released on PlayStation 3 in Japan on December 5, 2012, and in North America, Europe, and Australia on December 8, 2015. It received a high-definition port in Japan for PlayStation 4 on June 20, 2019, and worldwide on February 11, 2020. The high-definition port was released worldwide for Windows and Xbox One on January 28, 2021.

Outside of Asia, the PlayStation 3 release was only released digitally. The high-definition versions, however, were released worldwide on physical media as well as digitally.

Plot

Kazuma Kiryu, Haruka Sawamura, Shun Akiyama, Tatsuo Shinada, and Taiga Saejima find themselves in a conspiracy involving the Tojo Clan and the Omi Alliance.

Kiryu's story

In 2012, a hostess named Mayumi wanted to make Hakura Sawamura an idol. She convinced Haruka to come on board and got her trainers for singing and dancing.

She told Kazuma Kiryu that she would take care of Morning Glory Orphanage if he wasn't in the picture due to the bad publicity it could cause due to him being the former fourth chairman of the yakuza organization known as the Tojo Clan. Wanting to give the kids the best possible opportunities, Kiryu agreed and left Okinawa. He then changed his name to Taichi Suzuki and moved to Kyushu.

Kiryu fought off some local yakuza in the Nagasugai district of Fukuoka to save the top hostess at Olivier, Mayumi.

After witnessing Kiryu fighting, Yotaro Nakajima, the owner of Nagasu Taxi, wanted to help Kiryu as he felt he fought for a justifiable reason and had a kind heart. Nakajima offered him a job as a taxi driver and Kiryu accepted.

After Kiryu saved Mayumi, she spent a lot of time at his apartment looking after him despite his constant rejection of her romantic advances.

In December, Daigo Dojima, the sixth chairman of the Tojo Clan, took a cab in the middle of the queue so that he could talk to Kiryu. He told him that the Tojo Clan was in danger because the seventh chairman of the Omi Alliance was terminally ill and he believed that his successor may try to seize the Tojo Clan.

Kiryu let Daigo out before he was told his destination. Kiryu let him know that he was not interested in helping the Tojo Clan as he just wanted to be a cab driver.

Daigo left, and Kiryu had to apologize for breaking the rules by taking on a passenger in the middle of the taxi queue.

Shortly afterward, Daigo disappeared. Masato Aizawa and Yu Morinaga, Daigo's bodyguards, found it suspicious that Daigo chose to get in a taxi in the middle of the queue. They found out that the driver was named Taichi Suzuki, tracked him down, and realized Suzuki was really Kazuma Kiryu, the fourth chairman of the Tojo Clan.

They asked Kiryu to tell them where Daigo was headed. Not believing that he didn't know, they tried to beat the information out of him. Kiryu won the fight, let them know that he wanted to be just a taxi driver named Taichi Suzuki, and told them that he honestly didn't know where Daigo was headed.

Because the seventh chairman of the Omi Alliance was terminally ill and the sixth chairman of the Tojo Clan was missing, tensions were raised between the two yakuza organizations, threatening to turn into a full-blown war.

Hatsune Miku tie-ins

Hatsune Miku, a singing mascot that was created using multiple versions of the Yamaha Vocaloid singing synthesizer software, has appeared in several Project DIVA video games created by Sega in conjunction with Hatsune Miku's creator, Crypton Future Media.

Due to the connection with Sega, multiple tie-ins are included in Yakuza 5, including Hatsune Miku snow sculptures in Tsukimino, Hatsune Miku toys that can be obtained in UFO Catchers, and a Hatsune Miku-themed alternate costume for Haruka Sawamura.

Downloadable content

The PlayStation 3 release of Yakuza 5 had downloadable content. They are included with the remastered versions.

Every Battle Provision content expansion included a Staminan Royale, Tauriner++, and a Toughness Emperor. In addition, Battle Provisions 1 contained an Assassin's Spear and a Bulletproof Glass Amulet, Battle Provisions 2 contained a Ballbuster and a Battle Mail, Battle Provisions 3 contained a Brickshitter Beer and a Goddess of Children Amulet, Battle Provisions 4 contained an Immovable Belt and a Patriarch's Driver, Battle Provisions 5 contained a Gambler's Binding and a Sakura Storm, Battle Provisions 6 contained Double Leeks and a Payback Ring, Battle Provisions 7 contained an Antique Chain Mail, and a Zap Gun, and Battle Provisions 8 contained a Drow-Z 55 and Yakuza Training Gear.

Kamurocho Enjoyment Packs could only be used in Premium Adventure after the base game was completed. Kamurocho Enjoyment Pack 1 contained an Auto Token, High Payout Token, and a High Win Rate Token, Kamurocho Enjoyment Pack 2 contained a Chance Stone, Gambler's Token, and a Get-Rick-Quick Charm, Kamurocho Enjoyment Pack 3 contained a Banker's Piece, Player's Piece, and a Royal Joker Card, Kamurocho Enjoyment Pack 4 contained a Blackjack Amulet, Bust Amulet, and a Lucky Hanafuda Card, Kamurocho Enjoyment Pack 5 contained a 1-1-1 Card, Even Goro's Beads, and a Lopsider Cigarette, Kamurocho Enjoyment Pack 6 contained a Black Jewel, Red Jewel, and a Zero Jewel, Kamurocho Enjoyment Pack 7 contained a 1-2-3 Gum, Lucky Tile, and a Triple Yokan, and Kamurocho Enjoyment Pack 8 contained a 10-10-1 Charm, Give-Up Piece, and a Piss Mountain Stone.
