The COVID-19 pandemic, colloquially known simply as COVID, is a worldwide pandemic of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

The first known cases were identified in Wuhan, Hubei, China on December 12, 2019, when patients experienced symptoms of atypical pneumonia that did not respond well to treatments.

It led to over six million deaths and a worldwide disruption in every area of life.

The World Health Organization ended the global health emergency on May 5, 2023.
