The TurboGrafx-16, known as the TurboGrafx in the United Kingdom and Spain, and as the PC Engine in Japan and France, was a video game console developed by Hudson Soft and manufactured by NEC. It was released in Japan on October 30, 1987, in North America on August 29, 1989, in France on November 22, 1989, and in the United Kingdom and Spain in 1990.

Development

In July 1987, Hudson Soft developed the C62 System, which would become the development kit for the PC Engine, the name the system was given when NEC released it in Japan on October 30, 1987. It would later be released outside of Japan as the TurboGrafx-16, however, it retained the PC Engine brand name in France.

Legacy of the TurboGrafx-16

The legacy of the TurboGrafx-16 remains, even after its heyday. Independent, unlicensed games continue to be produced for the system to this day.

Konami, the parent company of Hudson Soft, capitalized on the system's continuing popularity with a dedicated console that contained modern hardware with an emulator designed by M2 to run the included games. The TurboGrafx-16 Mini, released as the PC Engine Mini in Japan and the PC Engine CoreGrafx Mini in Europe and Oceania, was released worldwide in 2020. The Japanese version featured fifty-eight built-in games, while the international versions featured fifty-seven. It had an HDMI display output for high definition televisions and contained one replica USB controller.
