Firework Thrower Kantaro's 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō was originally released for Family Computer in Japan on July 3, 1986.
It was later bundled with Ikki for Windows in Ultra 2000 Sunsoft Classic Games Vol. 2 on June 29, 2001 and in its budget re-release Enjoyable Sunsoft Masterpiece Selection Vol. 2 on July 2, 2004.
A bundle with The Wing of Madoola was released in Memorial☆Series Sunsoft Vol. 3 for PlayStation in Japan on December 27, 2001.
An enhanced port for feature phones developed in DoJa was released in Japan on September 19, 2003.
The PlayStation compilation including the game was released on PSOne Classics for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable in Japan on September 27, 2007.
The Family Computer version of Firework Thrower Kantaro's 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō was released on Virtual Console for Wii in Japan on October 14, 2008, on Windows in Japan for Project EGG on March 30, 2010, on Virtual Console for Nintendo 3DS in Japan on September 18, 2013, and on Virtual Console for Wii U on October 7, 2015.
It was released worldwide for the first time on Windows in Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection on April 17, 2024. The compilation, which also included Ripple Island and The Wing of Madoola, had an option in the front-end for English text but the games remained in Japanese. The compilation was also released on Nintendo Switch in Japan on April 18, 2024.
