The Matrix is an American multimedia franchise created consisting of books, comics, films, music, and video games.

Lana and Lilly Wachowski created the franchise with the release of the eponymous film in 1999.

Information about the fictional world of The Matrix

Intelligent machines need humans for fuel. They connect humans to machines to extract what they need and create a simulated environment to distract the humans while doing so.

This virtual environment is known as the Matrix. It recreates life on Earth with so much vivid detail that most humans are unaware the world they are living in is only a simulation.

A resistance group, at one point led by a man named Morpheus, figured out how to escape the Matrix. The resistance recruits people by telling the truth about their simulated lives. They give the potential recruits the option to continue living their simulated reality or to escape the simulation and to enter into the bleak reality where machines control the majority of the human population.
