When placing the ''Sonic the Hedgehog 3'' cartridge in the pass-through slot on the top of the ''Sonic & Knuckles'' cartridge, dubbed "Lock-on technology", Knuckles is added as a playable character. The game becomes ''Sonic 3 & Knuckles'', and upon completion of the levels and their respective stories in ''Sonic the Hedgehog 3'', the game continues directly into the story of ''Sonic & Knuckles'' and the respective levels.
