==History==
In 1996 when [[Gunpei Yokoi]], manager of [[Nintendo Research & Development 1]] resigned from [[Nintendo]], then-president of Nintendo, [[Hiroshi Yamauchi]], created Nintendo Research & Engineering Development and appointed [[Satoru Okada]] its general manager.

The hardware development team of Nintendo Research & Development 1 was reassigned to Nintendo Integrated Research & Development, while the software development team remained at Nintendo Research & Development 1. 

Throughout the lifespan of the development, Nintendo Research & Engineering Development designed Nintendo's portable [[video game console]]s.

In January 2012, Satoru Okada retired from Nintendo. On February 16, 2012, Nintendo RED was merged into [[Nintendo Integrated Research & Development]], which effectively combined the portable and home console development teams into one division.
