It was based on the ''[[Lupin the Third]]'' anime and was the first video game based on that property.

==Versions==
Taito released the arcade version in Japan in 1980. The upright arcade version was titled ''Lupin III''. A cocktail table arcade version was released that was titled '''''T.T. Lupin III'''.

There were two arcade versions. All characters in the original Japanese version were colored yellow and lacked music. The international version had multiple colors for the various characters, stage music, a stage clear jingle, and messages when stages are cleared. 

[[CPU Software]] released an unofficial conversion to [[FM-7]] [[computer]]s in Japan in 1981.

The Japanese computer magazine ''[[I/O]]'' published a BASIC conversion by [[Teruo Matsuura]] for [[Sharp MZ|MZ-80K]] computers in 1983.

The international arcade version was, via [[emulation]], included on the [[EGRET II Mini]]. It was released worldwide in 2022.
