The first game was the original ''[[Puyo Puyo (video game)|Puyo Puyo]]'', which was initially released on [[Family Computer Disk System]] and [[MSX2]] in Japan.

The video games were developed by Compile as a spin-off of its ''[[Sorcery Saga]]'' games. 

[[Sonic Team]] took on development duties in [[2001]] after [[Sega]] acquired full rights to the series.
